Consular Services

The Embassy's consular services include among other things issuing of Icelandic passports, emergency passports, assistance in connection with illness and death and legislation.

Passport

Icelandic Citizens are able to apply for passports through the Embassy of Iceland in Oslo.

All passports are produced by the National Register of Iceland and production takes up to six working days plus shipping time to the recipient. Please note that if there are holidays during the period, the processing time will be longer. Passports are sent by post. The applicant can request to collect his passport from the embassy or have it sent to the place where he is staying.

Emergency Passports are only issued to Icelandic citizens that are not able to apply for new passports through Icelandic Embassies. It should be noted that Emergency Passports are not ideal travel documents.

Please note that all applicants have to submit applications in person at the Embassy.
Passports are issued in Iceland and the estimated delivering time is 15 working days.

Opening hours for passport and ID card applications:

  • Tuesdays: 12:30-15:00
  • Wednesdays: 11:00-15:00
  • Fridays: 12:30-15:00

Passports for individuals under 18 years of age

Emergency Passports
NOTE! As emergency passports are only issued in urgent situations, it is important to send a formal application via email to the Embassy at [email protected], including the following information:

  • Name
  • National ID number
  • Reason for the application
  • Departure date
  • Destination
  • Duration of travel

Please note: According to Article 12 of the Icelandic Citizenship Act, an Icelandic citizen born abroad who has never had legal residence in Iceland may, under certain conditions, lose their Icelandic citizenship at the age of 22. To retain citizenship, a formal application must be submitted.

Passport Delivery
Registers Iceland sends passports via tracked letter post. If home delivery is requested, the passport may in some instances be delivered to the nearest post office. Valid identification is required when collecting the item.

If the recipient does not possess valid ID, it is possible to authorize another person with valid ID to collect the passport on their behalf. A proxy authorization form is available on the Posten website: Legitimasjon og fullmakter

Lost or stolen passportWhen you receive your passport it is advisable to make a photocopy of the first page or take note of your passport details. This information should be kept somewhere safe, and away from your passport in case it is lost or stolen.

If your passport is stolen in Norway or abroad, you should immediately report the loss to the nearest police station. You also need to report a loss of your passport to the issuing authority. The Icelandic Embassy in Norway can help you either by issuing a new passport or a temporary travel document.

Visa

Passport - ID cards

A valid passport is required for visitors to Iceland, except for citizens of the Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden travelling between the Nordic countries.

Citizens of the following countries may enter Iceland presenting, instead of passports, national identity cards issued by the competent authorities in their countries of origin:

Austria: Personalausweis.
Belgium: Carte d'Identité (Identiteitskaart, Personalausweis, Identity card), Identitätsdokument, Identity document issued for minors under 12 years, provided travelling with custodian.
Bulgaria: Lichna karta (ЛИЧНА КАРТА, Identity card).
Cyprus: Deltio Taytotitas (ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΤΑΥΤΟΤΗΤΑΣ, Kimlik Karti, Identity Card).
Czech Republic: Občanský průkaz (Czech Republic Identification Card).
Estonia: Eesti Vabariik Isikutunnistus (Republic of Estonia Identity Card).
Finland: Henkilökortti (Identitetskort, Identity Card).
France: Carte Nationale d'Identité.
Germany: Personalausweis (Identity card, Carte d'Identite), Vorläufiger Personal­ausweis (Identity card, Carte d'identite).
Greece: Deltio Taytotitas (ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΤΑΥΤΟΤΗΤΑΣ).
Hungary: Személyazonosító Igazolvány (Identity card).
Italy: Carta d'Identità.
Liechtenstein: Identitätskarte (Carte d'Identité, Carta d'Identità).
Lithuania: Asmens tapatybés kortelé (Personal Identity Card).
Luxembourg: Carte d'Identité (Identity Card, Personalausweis).
Malta: Karta Ta'l-Identità.
Netherlands: Nederlandse Identiteitskaart (Identity card, Carte d'identité).
Portugal: Bilhete de Identidade de Cidadão Nacional (Carte d'Identité, Identity card of national citizen) and Cartão de Cidadão (citizen card).
Poland: Rzeczpospolita Polska Dowód Osobisty (Republic of Poland Identity Card).
Romania: Carte d'Identite (Carte de identitate, Identity card).
Slovakia: Obciansky Preukaz (Identification Card).
Slovenia: Osebna Izkaznica (Identity Card).
Spain: Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI).
Switzerland: Carte d'Identité Citoyen Suisse (Identitätskarte Schweizerbürger, Carta d'Identità Cittadino Svizzero). and Identitätskarte (Carte d'Identité, Carta d'Identità, Carta d'Identitad, Identity Card) issued after June 30th 1994
Sweden: Nationellt identitetskort (National Identity Card, Carte nationale d'identité).

It is required that travel documents is valid for three months beyond the intended stay. It is though sufficient that travel documents of citizens of EEA  (EU and EFTA) countries are valid upon arrival.

Schengen Visas - Visas to Iceland

Iceland is a member of the Schengen cooperation which exempts travelers from border controls travelling between 26 EU and EFTA  countries. A uniform Schengen visa issued by one of the Schengen states is valid for travel within the whole Schengen area. Schengen visa should be applied for at an Embassy representing the state where the main destination is within the Schengen area.

All persons requiring visas, must apply for a visa at the applicable embassy/consulate before travelling to the Schengen area. For a list of embassies/consulates which handle applications for Iceland, see here.

The validity of a uniform Schengen visa is up to 90 days.

The following documents are required:

  1. A birth certificate confirming that each party to the prospective marriage has reached 18 years of age.

  2. A valid passport for each foreign individual

  3. A certificate of marital status

  4. A valid divorce degree if one or both of the individuals intending to marry have been married before. An original or certified copy, confirmed by the Ministry of Justice of Iceland, is required.

  5. An application form properly filled in and the certification of two witnesses confirming the parties ability to marry. The witnesses must write their names on the application before the ceremony. They must be 18 years of age (documentation required).
