HRC60 - Iceland statement - Item 10: General debate
Human Rights Council – 60th session
Item 10: General Debate
Statement by Iceland
3 October 2025
Mr. President,
Human rights are at the core of Iceland’s foreign policy, and we greatly value the work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to promote and protect them worldwide. At a time of growing pushbacks against democracy and fundamental freedoms, this work has never been more important.
Technical assistance and capacity building are vital for States to strengthen institutions, uphold the rule of law, and turn commitments into reality. In many cases, this support makes the difference between principles on paper and rights enjoyed in daily life.
As a member of this Council, Iceland is committed to constructive cooperation with OHCHR and all member states. We will continue to build on our strengths and emphasize collaboration and respectful dialogue, irrespective of background or circumstance.
Reflecting the importance we place on this mandate, Iceland has more than doubled its predictable core contribution to OHCHR for 2024–2028, reinforcing both its independence and the sustainability of its work.
In closing, for Iceland, the priority is clear: human rights must remain at the heart of our collective efforts. OHCHR’s technical cooperation and capacity-building are indispensable tools to turn principles into practice and ensure that dignity, freedom, and justice become lived realities for all.
I thank you.
