Statement by Iceland (no 44 of 109)

Mr. President,

Iceland welcomes the delegation of Malawi and its national report.

In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:

  1. Abolish the death penalty.
  2. Ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR.
  3. Adopt legislation explicitly prohibiting female genital mutilation.
  4. Criminalize marital rape.
  5. Legalize abortion in all circumstances and ensure access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services.
  6. Guarantee comprehensive education on sexual and reproductive health and rights throughout the country.
  7. Decriminalize same-sex relations between consenting adults by repealing relevant sections of the Penal Code.
  8. Criminalize all forms of discrimination against persons of diverse SOGIESC.

I wish Malawi all success for its review.

I thank you.
